Its really very simpleā¦
An HYC Member asks a fellow boater to attend an HYC event as a Guest. If the Guest thinks that they would like to join HYC and if the HYC Member who has invited the Guest feels that the Guest would be a good addition to the club; the membership process can begin. At this point, the HYC Member asks the HYC Membership Chair for a New Member Package. The HYC Member is responsible for guiding the Guest through the Application and Membership Processes. The New Member Package contains this article and Applications for Membership Part A and Part B . The Guest becomes a Prospective Member when the Application for Membership Part A is completed and received by the Membership Chair or HYC Officer. As part of the process of completing Part A the Guest will need to obtain the signature of two HYC Members as sponsors.
Next the applicant's name, pertinent information and sponsors are published on the website after Application for Membership Part A is completed returned to the Membership Chair. This alerts the general membership that a Guest has become a Prospective Member. It is the Prospective Member's responsibility to get to know as many HYC Members as possible leading up to the Membership Election.
The HYC Bylaws require that a Prospective Member attend three cruises with his or her vessel before an election can be held for the Prospective Member. Cruises qualify after the Application for Membership Part A is received. This is when the Guest officially moves from Guest to Prospective Member status. Prospective Members may receive access to the website to learn about club activities. Prospective Members do not however, receive access to the parts of the club roster which contains addresses, phone numbers, and other personal information until voted in as HYC Flag Members.
The HYC Sponsoring Member is responsible for the applicant he or she is bringing forth. The HYC Sponsoring Member serves as primary club contact and is responsible to inform the Prospective Member of club activities, tradition and protocol. The Prospective Member
must accept responsibility to behave in a manner that brings respect to HYC and the boating community. HYC is a vital, active and fun yacht club because of the hard work of its members who sponsor cruises and pitch in to help other cruise sponsors. Prospective Members are urged to take an active roll by helping cruise sponsors whenever possible. Membership is not a guarantee following the three qualifying cruises. When the Prospective Member has met the above-mentioned qualifications the Sponsoring Member requests of the Commodore that an election be held.
The Membership Chair will canvas the membership by mail-in secret ballot with a deadline/return date. If the Prospective Member is voted in, the burgee presentation is scheduled for the next cruise attended by the new HYC Flag Member.
